Session 1.4 How can we set long-term urban strategies within the framework of short-term political cycles?
Building a city that is genuinely sustainable and 'fit for the future' takes time, vision and investment. It also requires the buy-in of the city's politicians, citizens, businesses and other stakeholders. This session will see the Mayors of three cities of the European Green Capital and European Green Leaf Award debate how cities can implement long-term visions for sustainability, and set long-term goals and investments plans, when political cycles are often only three or four years. How can we create cross-party consensus on key issues, ensure long-term support for major city actions from citizens, businesses and other stakeholders? What challenges did they face and how were they overcome? What advice would these Mayors give to others? The session will also open up the debate to the participants and try to identify key success factors that allow cities to be successful in making the transition to sustainability.
