6.1 Green cities generate less waste

Waste prevention is regarded as the highest priority according to the waste hierarchy enshrined in EU waste law. How can cities encourage their citizens, businesses and institutions to generate less waste? Why does it pay off to reduce the amount of waste generated and how can it be done? What role does waste prevention and re-use play in the circular economy?

This session will be dedicated to the presentation of best practice examples from municipalities across the EU that will explain their waste prevention and management activities. In addition, there will be an opportunity to learn about the role and added value of the re-use centres. Finally, the participants will hear about a new tool by Zero Waste Europe dedicated to the municipalities with guidance on how to become a zero waste community.
