Session 4.4

The day after the 2019 elections: What role for the new European Parliament in closing the implementation gap?

In collaboration with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)

As exemplified by the creation of an Enquiry Committee from the European Parliament following the Dieselgate scandal as well as a number of other relevant initiatives, the current European Parliament has attempted to find a new role for itself within the context of inadequate implementation and enforcement of the environmental acquis. What has the parliament achieved so far and what else should it do to help close the implementation gap in a new context marked by mixed progress towards realising objectives of the 7th EAP, the need to break silos to realise SDGs and increased political pressure for giving greater implementing space to member States?
