Opening session

A New Beginning

As the world begins to recover and rebuild after COVID-19, EU Green Week 2020 will explore how the EU Green Deal and the new EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 can support this process.

Recent years have seen a growing awareness of the gravity of the ongoing environmental crisis. Now we have an opportunity to rethink our relationship with nature, to change the activities that are driving biodiversity loss and the wider ecological crisis, and to weigh up the implications for our economy and society.

The question now is – what happens next? What lessons can we draw from the crisis? What contribution can biodiversity make to society and the economy, and what role can it play in supporting and stimulating recovery in a post-pandemic world?

This opening session will consider the importance of protecting and restoring biodiversity in the new context. Tackling the environmental challenge we face can help support the recovery, boost green growth and jobs, and ensure that our planet is more resilient to future shocks of all kinds.

After Covid, we know that radical changes can happen fast. What we don't yet know is how to make the most of this new beginning, for people and nature. Green Week should provide some answers!
