WEEE Collect with the Recycling Patrol

The kids aren’t playing: a whole city collects WEEE with the Recycling Patrol

Bucharest may not be the EU top city when it comes to collecting e-waste, but starting this April, more and more people have started to look around the house, get the old home appliances that no longer work and send them to be recycled.

So, what happened? Here’s what – several schools from Bucharest who act as Recycling Patrols stirred their neighbourhoods to collect WEEE, as part of their campaign within the framework of EU Green Week. Every teacher and every pupil from the respective schools made a comittment to spread the word that old and broken electric appliances are nothing but e-waste, a very toxic category that needs to be recycled! Parents, neighbours, businesses and institutions were convinced to get rid of e-waste for the sake of the environment and for the well-being of the community.

The most impactful event was built around a highly appealing concept: „Treats for WEEE” (Prăjituri pentru Vechituri). At „George Topirceanu” School, a parent came up with the idea to give cookies to people who bring WEEE. Their idea was picked by a national television channel and they made the prime time news! The Recycling Patrol brought a lot of visibility for the EU Green Week movement. Many of the locals who participated in their actions found out for the first time about this initiative of the European Commission. The EU Green Week continues until the end of May, for the Recycling Patrols in Bucharest. More actions, more WEEE, more pleople informed coming up!
