Week of engagement to convert policies into action Crete’
EU Green Week : Days 1 and 2
Bamboo bike ride Crete has engaged with school children business owners, tourists and general public from the Eastern coast of Crete at Palokastro and the famous palm beach of Vai to the mountain village of Myritia, birthplace of Nikos Kazantsakis, the famous Cretan author of ‘Zorba the Greek’.
3 bike riders Thomas Monch, Spiros Petrakis and Abel Hailgeorious have ridden bamboo bikes for 144 km and altitude climbed to an altitude of 1600m.
They have been warmly welcomed at every stop for conversation about how everybody can ensure that environmental laws are enacted in Crete.
EU Green Week : Days 3 and 4
Bamboo bike ride Crete has engaged with more diverse groups of people from different communities in Crete.
The strong message we are hearing is that most people do not know what the EU environmental laws are and there is little or no environmental protection leadership or encouragement from the local government and municipalities. The bamboo bike riders, with EUGreenWeek mascot Gaia the turtle, have scaled steep mountain roads (up to nearly 2000 meters) with views of the sea and snow-capped mountains. They have visited remote mountain villages with ancient water springs and descended to sea level to meet people in busy holiday resorts.
EU Green Week : Day 5
Sunday 12th May 2019, 6 people (including 2 film crew), 2 cars, 3 bamboo bicycles and 2 mascots (Gaia and Ben) drove 267km from Almerida – Apokoronas to Palekastro - Lasithi at the far eastern coast of Crete.
The next morning for #EUGreenWeek the 3 bike riders started the long ride back.
Over 5 days they endured very steep high mountain roads with unfenced drops that are not for the faint hearted. Sometimes they endured the foul diesel fumes of trucks and the inconsiderate drivers hassling the bikes to go faster. They suffered some of the dreadful poor conditions of Cretan roads resulting in one crash and small injury.
One bike was also injured as it struggled with the steep mountain and lost a pedal.
6 people who did not all know one another well before, lived together like a ’tribe’ with little/no 'own time' or 'own space'. The purpose of the mission to encourage people to #TakeTheInitiative and enact environmental laws was greater than any temporary inconvenience.
The #BambooBicycleCrete CREW shared laughter, tears and deep reflective conversation about the state of our planet and hopes for positive change. The people who have supported this epic mission along the route have been outstanding. Their generosity has been overwhelming. It has been 6 days of determination, commitment, love and mutual support. NOW we must ALL play our part in ENACTIING ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS and more than that.
If we do not ACT NOW there is no hope for a healthy planet for our children to raise their families of the future.
#BambooBikeRideCrete2019 signing off.
